Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mowachaht (pronounced Mow-atch-uht), which translates to people of the deer, originate from a place called Friendly Cove, or Yuquot (translates to "Wind comes from all directions").

In the mid-to-late 1700's, first contact between Native peoples in what is now British Columbia, Canada and European explorers first happened in Yuquot.

A B-C First Nations chief has died after his canoe overturned in the Strait of Juan de Fuca off Dugeness Spit.

Chief Jerry Jack of the Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nations in Gold River was taking part in a summer intertribal canoe journey when he was killed yesterday.

Jack is best known for his involvement in the adventures of Luna, a young killer whale who was killed by a boat propeller last March.

Another man and two women from the canoe were also sent to hospital in Port Angeles.
