Mouthcard, Kentucky

Mouthcard (the proper spelling is Mouth Card-meaning "mouth of Card Creek") is a small community on the state line of Virginia and Kentucky in the county of Pike. It is nestled on the [[Levisa Fork]] of the Big Sandy River, one of the major habitats of wildlife, and a stable life force to the community. It is on the major U.S. Highway 460, which meets U.S. 23 in Pikeville.
In a part of Mouthcard known as Toonerville, an ancient Indian burial ground was discovered and some of the artifacts are on display at the Breaks Interstate Park- about 25 miles from Mouthcard.
Mouthcard was founded by the Ramey family over 200 years ago. The decendants of James Madison still live in the area. Other contributing families include the Belcher's, Stiltners, and Hunts (who all four families mentioned have the same relatives.)
The life of the community lies around Mouthcard Baptist Church, founded in circa 1890 and is the oldest known church in the Pike County Association of Southern Baptists. This beautiful church plays host to many community events. The present Pastor is Joe Tuttle, while the Song Minister is Bill Minckley.
"The best place to grab a bite to eat" was a little restaurant called the Dairy Hut owned by one of Mouthcard's finest: Ann Ramey. She ran it for almost 30 years until a fire burned it to the ground in 1997. Ramey decided not to rebuild, but to retire and spend her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
There are no major stores in Mouthcard: in fact, the closest Walmart in the area is Pikeville KY, 23 miles away. It does, however, host an auto parts store, several gas stations, and a locally owned grocery store.
Once a year, the community celebrates its residents by having "Mouthcard Community Day" every year. This is where all the people from the area get together for a free soup bean dinner, free concert, and free fun and games.
Local communities also feed from and give to Mouthcard. One of which is Fedscreek, KY: which plays hosts to our local elementary school. Another is Lick Creek, which hosts the home of the Warriors- East Ridge High School.
As you see, Mouthcard is a place for friends, and especially family.You will expect nothing but smiles from this sleepy little community, I know I did.
