Mountain View High School (Utah)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mountain View High School is located at 665 W. Center St. in Orem, Utah. It features a double gym, a double-tiered auditorium (that hosted the Miss Utah Pageant for years), several tennis courts, baseball fields, a stadium with embedded track, and a two-part cafeteria. The school first opened its doors in the 1980-81 school year as a full 4 year High School. Students arrived with paint still wet and construction still going on.

The name of the school was voted on by the students who were going to attend it during its first year, and the Bruin was chosen as the Mascot. The students really wanted to name the school "Rocky Mountain High," but this was frowned upon by many administrators and adults. Students were taken from 1/2 of 10-12th graders at Orem High School and 1/2 the 9th graders from Orem Jr. High and 1/2 from Lakeridge Jr. High. The school fight song was co-written by a student and the band teacher.

The school originally gained a reputation for its Drama and Theater Department, and later also for its award winning yearbooks (The Summit) and athletic excellence.

Adjacent to the school is a Mormon seminary building for students choosing to forfeit their study hour/release time for religious study. Also nearby is the Orem Recreation Center - with pool and track and basketball/raquetball courts - and Orem Elementary School. The school itself is a long, narrow submarine-like building with two levels, including an overlooking balcony. The original students often called it "the Love Boat."
