Mount Vernon, Iowa

Mount Vernon is a city in Linn County, Iowa, adjacent to the city of Lisbon. The city's population was 3,390 when the 2000 census figures were released, but that number was later revised to 3,808. A special census taken by the city in 2004 counted 4,171 residents. [1]

The town is located on significant transportation corridors, both current and historical. The main line of the Union Pacific Railroad passes through the city, and the town is located on the historic Lincoln Highway. U.S. Highway 30 and Iowa Highway 1 intersect in the southern part of town.

Mount Vernon is located at 41°55′27″N, 91°25′11″W (41.924096, -91.419679)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²). 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.29% is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 3,390 people, 1,129 households, and 795 families residing in the city. The population density was 376.1/km² (973.0/mi²). There were 1,192 housing units at an average density of 132.3/km² (342.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.05% White, 0.65% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.94% of the population.

There were 1,129 households out of which 37.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.09.

The population spread: 25.6% under the age of 18, 20.5% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $51,228, and the median income for a family was $59,205. Males had a median income of $39,402 versus $27,358 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,027. About 4.1% of families and 5.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 3.3% of those age 65 or over.

Mount Vernon is the home of Cornell College, a liberal arts institution with an enrollment of approximately 1,100 students. Cornell's entire campus is on the National Register of Historic Places.

In the United States general elections, 2006, Cornell political science professor David Loebsack was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in an upset victory over 15-term incumbent Jim Leach.
