[edit] Athletics

Mount Tabor High School hosts many athletic programs, a full list of which includes baseball, lacrosse, basketball, soccer, cheerleading, softball, cross country, swimming, field hockey, tennis, football, volleyball, golf, wrestling, track, and marching band. Its sports teams have won several state championships. Students can participate in any sport for a small equipment fee, but may have to "try-out" for larger teams. In 2006 the Mt. Tabor JV football team went 6-4 on the year. They had a lot of players who made all - county. The best was Denard Jones who was a first team all-county selection. The freshman which is the class of 2010 held their own with Tai Elliot making second team all-county and Tre Crosby adding his name to the list. Next year look for Tai to make plays at Safety. While Crosby looks to add to his 3 interceptions and 58 tackles from last year. Crosby will also play a little offense in 2007 and will recieve his first high school carry next year. For the varsity team Ed Gainey will emerge again as a leader. He is expected to go on to play Division 1 college football and will excelle there. The frontrunner for him looks to be Virginia Tech. There are many rumors that are going around saying that Head JV coach Dan Marazita will be fired and Coach Tyshaun Brown will be the head coach. However noone is quite sure what will officially happen. The freshman class was not as good as last years so maybe for the first time in a long time there will be no sophmores on the Varsity football team. However the leading candidates to make the varsity team are Tai Elliot at linebacker and Crosby at Corner. Speaking of the JV team the QB position will be up for grabs next season. We very well may see Hunter Ross there or Justin Carragan. The Spartans also have recieved intrest for a new kicker in Abraham Fonseca who plays soccer. He had a dynamic season there and will be trying out for a spot there. The varsity Spartans seem to be a little more stable as far as the position battles go. But look for the biggest battle to come in that Defensive Backfield. Even though you can have players go both ways this team will still need two more solid corners to cover. With Ed Gainey and Casey already having their spot there. Somebody else will have to step up. Will it be an offensive player who gets the nod to start or a junior in David Lyles or Jeff Hoover. Maybe a sophmore corner will come in and try to fight for the spot. Tre was the only corner that recieved all county votes from the defensive backfield for JV which makes him a likley target. But there is a promising sophmore named Brandon Gregory who is looking to make an impact this year. Who knows but the Spartans will be back in 2007 with a vengence in both JV and Varsity respectively. One thing is for sure though Ed Gainey will be a historic player and he will have to remain healthy throughout the season to ensure victories for the Spartans
