Mount Guyot (Tennessee)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mount Guyot is the second-highest mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is located on the border of the States of North Carolina and Tennessee. The mountain was named in honor of Arnold Guyot (1807 - 1884), a Swiss immigrant and geologist who measured the height of mountain peaks across the United States, including several of the highest peaks in the Great Smokies. The mountain rises to 6,621 feet (2,018 meters) above sea level. Like most peaks in the Great Smokies, the mountain rises prominently above the surrounding lower terrain, and rises nearly 5,000 feet (1,525 meters) above its base. Unlike Clingmans Dome, the highest mountain in the Smokies, Mount Guyot is still relatively isolated - no roads of any kind have been built on the mountain, and the only way to reach the top is via the Appalachian Trail. Hikers who make the trek are rewarded with superb views of one of the last true wilderness areas in the Eastern United States.
