Mount Douglas High School (MDHS), or locally referred to as "Mount Doug", is a traditional, four year public secondary school located in Cadboro Bay, British Columbia which serves the Greater Victoria School District. The mascot for Mount Doug is Rambo the Ram, the team is named the "Mount Doug Rams" and the school's main rival is the Lambrick Park and their Lions. The official colors are purple and gold. With a student body of around eleven hundred, MDHS is considered an average size high school for Greater Victoria. Academically, Mount Doug is consistently ranked as one of the top fifty public schools across the nation. Confusion often occurs because Mount Douglas High School is not located in the inland neighborhood of Mt. Doug, rather the beach community of Cadboro Bay, which both are located in the district of Saanich in city of Victoria, BC which are all parts of the Capital Regional District, or CRD. The school is best known for its sports, especially the Varsity Football team, which went to the BC Provincial finals (the Sunway Bowl) in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and the Girl's Basketball team, who became provincial champions in 2005. Due to the short distance between the Greater Victoria area and Western Washington, the Junior Varsity and Varsity football teams often travel south to the United States to compete against more teams that offer stronger competition. The school is located on the outskirts of the University of Victoria campus on Gordon Head Road, beside UVic's Ian Stewart Center (home of the Victoria Kings hockey club), between McKenzie and Laval Avenues. MDHS is located only minutes away from Cadboro Bay, which has been recently called Canada's Laguna Beach, and the Pacific Ocean. During the spring months, students often spend their afternoons relaxing or skim boarding at the beach. Southern Vancouver Island temperatures are much like Southern California in the spring and summer, and the island has much of the same great surfing locations scattered on the secluded western side.

The current Mount Doug building is in desperate need of expansion and renovation, as well as seismic upgrades for safety. A new fine arts wing, auditorium and cafeteria has been proposed and construction is scheduled to begin in 2008.

[edit] History

Founded in 1939, Mount Doug has moved buildings over the years, starting first, at the current Cedar Hill Middle School Campus. In 1970, MDHS got a brand new building (current) to accommodate it's rising student body. Today, Mount Doug still uses this building but also has seven portable classrooms attached to the school, yet still needs a expansion.

[edit] Academic Programs

Mount Doug plays host campus for the district's challenge and gifted student program which offers a select group of students the opportunity to challenge themselves with additional academic work, as well as increased difficulty of normal work. MDHS also runs optional honors and AP programs in addition to the challenge program.

There are 81 full time teachers that instruct at MDHS. Each class is 80min. long, starting at 8:30am PT and ending at 3:00pm PT, or 1:45pm PT on Fridays. There are four blocks per day. A full timetable would consist of eight 80min. classes, over two semesters each year. The first semester is runs from September to the end of January. The second runs from February though June. For variety, the two morning blocks and the two afternoon blocks each semester will 'flip' every second day. (ie. Mon/Wed/Fri is be AB CD, Tues/Thurs would be BA DC).

[edit] Athletic Programs

Note: This list does not include sports which are currently clubs and thus not officially recognized in the BC Inter-Scholastic Athletics Program. These "club" sports include Mountain Biking, Ski Club, chess, the school newspaper, yearbook, choir, jazz band, drama club, debate team, improv team or the math club.
