Mount Ayr is a city in Ringgold County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Ringgold CountyGR6.

Mount Ayr is located at 40°42′51″N, 94°14′13″W (40.714210, -94.236892)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.6 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.6 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.39% is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,822 people, 780 households, and 492 families residing in the city. The population density was 278.1/km² (720.2/mi²). There were 856 housing units at an average density of 130.6/km² (338.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.96% White, 0.27% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.05% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.44% of the population.

There were 780 households out of which 26.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 6.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 20.6% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 30.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 80.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,893, and the median income for a family was $37,188. Males had a median income of $27,333 versus $20,184 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,444. About 8.3% of families and 13.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.1% of those under age 18 and 14.5% of those age 65 or over.

Mount Ayr has one high school (7-12) and one elementary school (K-6), as well as a preschool. Enrollment averages around 50 students in each class. Mount Ayr Community High School (MACHS) has a strong music department including marching band, concert band, and jazz band. MACHS also has good sports programs and offers football, volleyball and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and bowling in the winter; golf and track in the spring; and baseball or softball in the summer. Mount Ayr has a beautiful 9-hole golf course. The city also has a six lane bowling ally and a miniature golf course. There is a movie theater in the process of being built and a local library. There is a public swimming pool as well as Judge Lewis Park. On the east side of town, there is a nature walk. Mount Ayr also has Loch Ayr where public boating and swimming is allowed in a contained man-made lake.

Mount Ayr has a wide variety of general and department stores. On Highway 2, there is a Breadeaúx Pizza place, a Casey's General Store with kitchen meals, a Sinclair gas station, a Dollar General store, a Hy-Vee grocery store, a five star hotel named The Mount Ayr Inn, and Philips 66 gas station. In the downtown area, Mount Ayr has a Pamida department store and CGI grocery store. Antiques and collectibles are available at Aunt Jennie's Attic, with approximately 3500 sq ft of displays including furniture, glassware, quilts, antique tools, and much more.

Mount Ayr also has a few diners and restaurants. There is a sandwich store called the Substation, much like Subway; a fifties diner, Peggy Sue's, and a restaurant, Smith's Sports and Spirits bar and grill, another is Breadeaúx Pizza which is a pizza place. Mount Ayr has a local ice cream store, Dairi Sweet.
