The Mottos' Committee (MOTCOM) is a Wikipedian independent agency charged with the development, application and integration of all Wikipedia new and old mottos, including those related to voluntary Wikipedian associations and organizations.

The MOTCOM is currently undergoing a revival initiative. The idea is pretty simple: to have a daily unofficial Wikipedia motto included on the Community Portal.

  • Start date: one of the Sundays
  • Template: {{motd}}
  • Overseers: Childzy and Geo.plrd
  • Designated place: a banner on Community Portal and any other space (e.g. user pages)
  • New nominations: welcome!

[edit] Latin - needs translation / verification

  1. Ephemera et cetera (Ephemera and the rest)
  • Ephemera is not a Latin word - it is from Greek "Ephemeron" meaning "fly away quickly" THEPROMENADER 22:03, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
  1. Aut disce aut discede. (Either learn or leave)
  2. Hominis scientiae summa (The best things of human knowledge)
better translated as "The sum of human knowledge". Dev920 13:12, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
  1. Omne ignotum pro magnifico (Everything unknown is taken for magnificent [1]; this looks like it's missing a verb)
  2. Caveat lector (Reader, beware of mistakes)
This translates literally as "Let the reader beware" Dev920 13:12, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
  1. A chaos, ordo (Order out of chaos.)
  2. A chaos, veritas (Truth from chaos.)
AFAIK "chaos" is Greek, and "a" goes with the ablative, e.g. "ab urbe condita", not "ab urbs condita". These two are dubious. -- Omniplex 04:06, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
  1. Semper ubi sub ubi (Always where under where)
  • "ubi" = "where" = play-on-words "wear".... THEPROMENADER 22:03, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
  1. Scientia potentia (Latin for "Knowledge is power")
Both are nominative, and has no "is". More accurately should be "Scientia potestas est". Dev920 13:12, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
  1. Scientia et sapientia (Latin for "Science/knowledge and wisdom")
  2. Scientia in bona fide (Knowledge in good faith)
  3. Nihil humanum a nobis alienum (Latin: "Nothing human is alien to us")
  4. De et pro populo (Latin, "by the people and for the people")
  5. Per aspera ad absurdum (Through hardships to the absurd)
  6. Sapientia et doctrina stabilitas (Wisdom and doctrine steadfastness) (needs clarification)
  7. Rosa rubicundior / lilio candidior / omnibus formosior / semper in te glorior
    • Redder than the rose, whiter than the lilies, fairer than everything, I will always glory in thee. - motto from here.
  8. Festina lente (German equivalent is "Eile mit Weile", don't know the English one; basically means "don't stress yourself too much"; literally, "hasten slowly")
  9. Mereo Et Merito (Deserving of merit)
  10. Flamas accipe et ardes (accept the fire and burn)
"arde" I think is the vocative(the order).Dev920 13:12, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Not necessarily Latin

  1. ars longa, vita brevis (loosely, art is long, life is short)
  2. Now is when things happen. (quote from Glenn)
  3. "the moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on..." (from the Rubaiyat)
  4. "the pump don't work, cause the vandals stole the handle" (Bob Dylan)

[edit] Question about the Motto scheduled for 8/20

It currently reads "Made in Jimmy ®". Is the point that Wikipedia is somehow created inside Jimbo's body? That somehow implies to me that Jimbo Wales is unique amongst male humans by having a uteris. How about something along the lines of "Made under Jimmy's oversight ®"? -- llywrch 23:17, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

How about a simple "made in Jimmy's mind"? :) Renata 00:16, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Still needs the "®". ;-) -- llywrch 00:40, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template

I've created a template that could help users navigate through the MOTD related pages:

Any thoughts?--TBCTaLk?!? 04:17, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I like this template, please post on the desk

so we can discuss it Geo. 02:17, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I Exist Again!

Just so everyone knows, I'm back from my involuntary Wikibreak (look at my userpage diffs to see why) with a new ISP. Therefore, I'm fully active on WP, including here. Anything you need me to do for the project, I'll be happy. —Vanderdeckenξφ 10:42, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Emergency!

There's no motto for today! From now on, it's all TBD. --Gray PorpoisePhocoenidae, not Delphinidae 01:24, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] only type motto

On the motto day page (Wikipedia:Motto of the day/December 14, 2006), simply type the motto, without bolding, italics, or quotaion marks. This is taken care of in the {{motd}} template. Thanks! Reywas92Talk 21:40, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What's happenning??

Why has the motto been a redlink for the past three days? What are the Overseers doing?! --The Raven's Apprentice (Talk|Contribs) 05:17, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm sure they have a good reason. They wouldn't just forget the whole thing. May the Edit be with you, always. T-borg (drop me a line) 15:28, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
Though I was just wondering, one can't just click on said redlink and write his/her own motto, in place of the "official" Motto of the day, can one? Just curios, other people might be tempted, don't you think? May the Edit be with you, always. T-borg (drop me a line) 15:01, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

What ought to be done is for an overseer to go ahead and schedule mottos for the next few weeks. --Gray PorpoisePhocoenidae, not Delphinidae 02:41, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Here we are. Redlink again. --The Raven's Apprentice (Talk|Contribs) 14:00, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ridiculous

I will try to keep a cool head about this but this is my opinion. This is flat out ridiculous how the motto is always redlinked. Does anybody realize how many people use the MOTD and love it dearly and find it enjoyable. But latly the mottos have been redlinked. I have come across so many userpages that used to have the MOTD but don't anymore because it has been redlinked all the time. Does anybody feel the same way as I do? I am saying this only because I would hate to see such a fun project go down in "red" flames.-- Seadog 00:33, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I changed my motto to my talk page because I didn't want red links on my userpage. It's mostly fixed, being red every now and again at ~midnight(UTC). | AndonicO Talk | Sign Here 19:54, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
They've changed it around a few times. A while ago, it said, "This is the temporary motto of the day. Hooray!" Now, it just shows up blank. --Gray Porpoisecetaceans have large brains 21:30, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps it would be best to assign another group the task of scheduling mottos, but still have the overseer approve and reject mottos. Tennis DyNamiTe (sign in) 22:00, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Another option would be to let the overseers retain that privilege, but allow anyone to schedule the current day's motto if it does not exist. --Gray PorpoiseYour wish is my command! 22:10, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
