[edit] Important information for all users of this page

To add a motto for review simply add your motto to the top of the in review section in this fashion:

===Example motto===
Origin and/or comments of/on your motto --~~~~ DO NOT repeat the motto in the second line. It is annoying, messy, and takes up more disk space on the Wikimedia servers. Anyone can vote for approval, simply vote Support or Oppose and if possible leave a reason why, decisions will be made after 7 days and they will be moved to either the Approved or Rejected subpages. The Overseer will make final determinations.
Only the overseers (they know who they are...) are permitted to post Approved or Rejected, for technical reasons. Please use Support or Oppose instead. Previous Nominations

Overseers: If you approve/reject a motto, please move the motto to the appropriate list at the bottom of this page. If you support/oppose a motto, leave it where it be so that others may comment upon it.

  • Support I'm liking these star wars quotes and I like this one better than the Dooku one. Oh and...
Comment What is up with all these links? Is that a norm or a goal of the motto of the day? To link to all these wikipolicies and terms and such because if it is then I do not have much to offer because I am in no way familiar with the wikiculture. Just a question. --Goodface87 06:24, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Any and all suggestions are appreciated, and by no way the inclusion of links is necessary, it's just that some mottos, like this one need them for clarification reasons. Plus, you can always ask the others about certain links, and someone will surely inform you. I myself don't know all the Wikipedia related pages, so don't worry. --May the Edit be with you, always. T-borg (drop me a line) 11:47, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Support. It's a little obscure, but how about impossibly outnumbered? (I support that too). --Tewy 01:39, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
  • That can also do. I just thought if someone sees that long list, it'll make a bigger impression than if he saw a simple number. • I'm not of a Dharmic religion, so I don't know. Support if nobody has a problem with it, but oppose if it causes offence. --Gray PorpoiseYour wish is my command! 00:40, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Oppose for several reasons: (1) Yin is not evil; it's a dark, passive, feminine force, and identifying it with vandalism is both offensive (to me, anyway) and somewhat incongruous (vandalism being definitely an active kind of thing); (2) Yin and Yang are both disambigs; the page is Yin and Yang, which kind of contradicts the explicit meaning; (3) I oppose on principle the approval of any more mottos linking to Wikipedia:Vandalism unless they are really, really funny. I skimmed through this page earlier and there are just way too many of them. - AdelaMae (t - c - wpn) 20:54, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Then Jimbo said, "Let there be Wikipedia."

This actually comes from the following reimagining of Genesis 1:1-13 (please bear with me on this one):

In the beginning, Jimbo created MediaWiki and Wikimedia. MediaWiki was empty and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and Jimbo's Spirit was moving over the ocean.
Then Jimbo said, "Let there be Wikipedia," and there was Wikipedia. Jimbo saw that Wikipedia was good, so he divided Wikipedia from the darkness. Jimbo named Wikipedia "day", and the darkness "night". Evening passed, and morning came. This was the first day.
Then Jimbo said, "Let there be something to divide the MediaWiki in two." So Jimbo made the air and placed some of the MediaWiki above the air, and some below. Jimbo named the air, "Wikimedia". Evening passed, and morning came. This was the second day.
Then Jimbo said, "Let the MediaWiki under Wikimedia be gathered together so the dry land will appear." And it happened. Jimbo named the dry land "categories" and the MediaWiki that was gathered together "portals". Jimbo saw that this was good.
Then Jimbo said, "Let the categories produce articles—some with information, and others to disambiguate information." And it happened. Wikipedia produced articles with information, and disambiguation pages. Jimbo saw that all this was good. Evening passed, and morning came. This was the third day.

(This quote can immediately be moved to BJAODN if necessary.) While this is factually incorrect in areas, I think it pretty much sums up the very beginnings of Wikipedia. What does every one else think? --JB Adder | Talk 12:56, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

    • I wouldn't remove it, because there's no reason to hide an opposed motto. You may close the discussion, however, if you feel it's over. --Tewy 01:40, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
      • True. I'm a Christian myself (Anglican, more precisely), and my original intention for the motto (and the quote moreover) was not to offend anybody. The Biblical context may have been a bad idea, alhough many have employed the same for effect. (I actually got the idea from an early Rugrats episode, and built the above quote around the motto, although probably without consideration to others, which is my main mistake.) --JB Adder | Talk 05:58, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

    • How can I indicate where the original quote is from, then? My biggest worry is that someone reading this wouldn't get it as much because they didn't realize it was from a movie. (And I think a link to Wikipedia would be "superfluous, really"). --Tewy 01:14, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
      • I didn't even know the movie existed! That's how much it helped me. Of course, I'm on the computer all day, and the outside world is, well, outside; the average person would probably know better. I didn't get it was from the movie, but I still supported. [edit] And so, my fellow Wikipedians, ask not what your wiki can do for you; ask what you can do for your wiki.

And so, my fellow Wikipedians, ask not what your wiki can do for you; ask what you can do for your wiki. - If that's too long, which I think it may be, the "And so, my fellow Wikipedians" part can be dropped. The motto is a spin on "And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country", a quote from John F. Kennedy. -Gray Porpoise 17:25, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
