[edit] Description
MotorStorm delivers visceral off-road racing, plunging players into a frenzied environment awash with grit, mud and petrol, in a game that leaves the standard rules of racing in the dust. Gone are the limits of power restrictions, limited classes, and qualifying rounds. Players simply choose their vehicle from a massive range – including dirt bikes, ATVs, sand rails, rally cars, monster trucks, and everything in between – then hit the track in a no-holds-barred sprint to the finish line. Carving a swathe of destruction through the ever-changing wilderness, players must compete in a gasoline-fuelled, horsepower spectacle where the only rule is to try and stay alive.
[edit] Early impressions
[edit] Video footage
Early details released by Sony and UK-based Evolution Studios show fantastically rendered video sequences. So good looking in fact that many gaming enthusiasts and members of the press remain sceptical as to the source of the material shown - with most people suspecting the footage to be pre-rendered as opposed to in-game real-time footage.
However in March 2006 shortly following the Game Developers Conference leaked footage of a tech demo was spread across the internet on sites such as YouTube. The Demo shows a yellow buggy (That featured in the E3 video) and a Motorbike both cutting through mud, as well as splashing the mud onto a white van. Being a technical demo it didn't show any gameplay aspects, or if the final game will reach the standard of the E3 '05 Video. However Sony Representative Phil Harrison mentioned it would make an appearance at E3 '06.
The game did in fact appear at E3 '06. Although it missed the first day of the Expo due to the show version only being completed that day and being flown over to LA. The Build at the show was only 50% complete but still showed some effects such as motion blur and deformation of the tracks.
[edit] Media Coverage
Evolution Studios' Matt Southern has provided a world exclusive interview in the August/September issue of Australian GamePro magazine where he commented on the difference between the seven different vehicle types, the quality of the CPU A.I., the game's modes, deformable terrain, the game's final graphical quality and the game's online multiplayer features.
[edit] Release
MotorStorm is set to be released with the PlayStation 3 console during the first quarter of 2007 in North America [1], December 14, 2006 in Japan, and a to-be-advised date for the Europe and the rest of the world.
[edit] Demos
Two demos have been made available to the public. The first is only available on Playstation 3 retail kiosks. The second is only available for download at the Playstation 3 Online Store. While both feature the same two tracks, the kiosk demo allows the player to switch vehicles on the grid before the race starts. The downloadable demo has a smoother framerate but at the cost of visual detail. It also lets the player switch on SIXAXIS motion sensing for steering.
One of the events playable on the demos is titled "Massive Damage!" [2] This is a reference to a demonstration of Genji: Days of the Blade, in which executive producer Bill Rich mentions attacking a boss's "weak point" for "massive damage."
