Motherfucker

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Motherfucker (also contracted forms muthafucka, mu-fucker, mo-fugger, mofucka, mother, mofo, mufuka, maafaka, mahfah, muh fucka, muzzer fuzzer, mudder Banger, muffuka and countless others) is a common insult and profanity in the English language. The term is widely viewed as an obscenity, but may be used by some in a neutral or positive way (cf.nigga).

The term is literally an accusation of incest[verification needed], although as with most insults, it is used pejoratively. When used in this way specifically in relation to a man, it may be intended as an attack on his masculinity. Many consider "motherfucker" to be one of the most offensive profanities in the English language. A study published in 2000 found that British people consider it second only to "cunt" in severity (Hargrave, 2000).

In the 1960s and 1970s, the initials M.F. became a common, less explicit substitute for the term.

"Motherfucker" is one of the seven dirty words that, according to comedian George Carlin, can't be said on television.

The late stand-up comedian Richard Pryor frequently used "motherfucker" as a term of endearment both on and off stage, and still used it in the positive sense to address his fans on his official website [1]. He stated in a January 2005 web post rebutting rumors of his losing his voice that "I'm still a talking motherfucker."

Stone Cold Steve Austin, who also refers to his style of walking as B.M.F. (Bad Mother Fucker)

In Leroi Jones' book Tales, the word is bowdlerized to "motherfouler."

Much of the buzz surrounding the release of the 2006 film Snakes on a Plane stemmed from the decision by New Line Cinema to heed fan requests to have Samuel L Jackson's character utter the one-liner "I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!" Jackson is famous for having played tough guy characters who frequently used the word "motherfucker" and its variations in his previous films, most notably Pulp Fiction, in which he carried a wallet he described as being "the one that says 'Bad mother fucker'".

The Venice Beach hippie comedian Swami X typically used the term "Fuck", "Fucking" or "Motherfucker" in every other sentence. In between, he preferred "nymphomaniac". See Swami X.

Jason Mewes performed a rap in the Kevin Smith directed movie Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back in which the term "mother mother fuck, mother mother fuck fuck" was used. Many cult followers of Kevin Smith movies have since memorized the entire rap.

Bernie Mac In Kings of Comedy claims in his routine that Motherfucker is a common noun in African-American slang. "Have you seen that motherfucka Johnny? That motherfucka owes me 5 motherfuckin' dollars! I asked his motherfucking mamma! She said she aint seen the motherfucka!"

Conversely, the folk singer Arlo Guthrie used the term "father-raper," which may be considered the antonym of "motherfucker", in his epochal talking-blues record, Alice's Restaurant (1969).

Both "Dutch" Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Michael Harrigan (Danny Glover) tell the alien Predator, "You are one ugly motherfucker" -- in Michael's case, the alien angrily finishes the line for him.

Jazz Trumpeter Miles Davis was known to use Motherfucker nearly every other word during a certian point in his career. It has even been recorded that he prefered to emphasise the 3rd syllable (Fuck).
