Mother (Japanese: 「おかあさん……」 - Okaa-san...) is the third episode of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2003-10-18.
Edward and Alphonse demonstrated a gift for alchemy at a very young age, transforming some sand into a doll for Winry Rockbell, and frightening her in the process. Obviously, they take after their father, who had abandoned his family some time before. Their mother, Tricia Elric, is proud of their abilities, and encourages their efforts. Ed hates his father for the sadness his absence brings.
When Ed and Al are ages 10 and 9, respectively, Tricia Elric dies from a chronic illness. Ed vows that somehow, they’ll bring their mother back from death. After apprenticing themselves to a master alchemist, the brothers use her training, a precise collection of the chemicals that make up a human body, and their own blood in an attempt to resurrect Tricia Elric. The results are catastrophic; Edward loses his left leg, Alphonse loses his entire body. Ed gives his right arm, literally, to attach Al’s soul to a nearby suit of armor.
Lt. Colonel Roy Mustang arrives at Rockbell Automail that same night, following up on a letter he received from Ed and Al when they were trying to contact their father, Hohenheim, when their mother fell ill. Mustang has been looking for their father, too, but he is far more impressed with the brothers for having survived their attempt at human transmutation. Pinako Rockbell, Winry’s grandmother, is annoyed by this and orders Mustang to leave.
Using the money Tricia Elric left to them, Ed purchases automail prosthetics from Pinako, for he wants to take Mustang up on his offer to become a State Alchemist. Becoming a “dog of the military” would give him access to the State’s research materials on alchemy, and Ed is determined to do whatever it takes to restore his brother’s body and his own limbs. On the day they leave Risembool, the Elric brothers burn down their childhood home.
[edit] Miscellanea
- This episode is the start of an extended flashback sequence (Al recounting his and Ed's story to Rosé at the end of the previous episode) that concludes in Episode 9.
- Izumi Curtis makes a cameo appearance with her shadow over "Yock Island"(explained in episode 28 "All is One, One is All) as Alphonse explains that he and Edward had hired a teacher to teach them alchemy.
- In later episodes they state that Al can't go in water because of the blood seal, but in this episode, while Ed and Al are sparring, Ed kicks him into the water and he's fine.
