[edit] Content
It comprises some of her previous songs, remixes, and new tracks co-written and co-produced by Joel Madden, lead vocalist for Good Charlotte and Duff's ex-boyfriend as of November 2006. Joel's brother Benji contributed to the album, as did Goldfinger's John Feldmann. Duff said on the music video show Total Request Live that Most Wanted was not meant to be a greatest hits album, but that her label had told her that it was time to release another album.
It is available in both standard and bonus versions. The standard version includes her famous hits, and three new songs. The bonus version, also known as the Signature Edition or Collector's Edition, includes four new songs, bonus packaging, and bonus material. The standard edition features a hidden track, a remix of "I Am". "The Getaway", "Mr. James Dean" and "Fly" were taken from Hilary Duff (2004), while "So Yesterday" and "Metamorphosis" originated from Duff's debut album Metamorphosis (2003). "Girl Can Rock" and "Our Lips Are Sealed" were not included on any of Duff's previous album releases, though the former was included on two renewed Metamorphosis CDs.
[edit] Critical reception
Reviews were generally mixed as many felt that there was no need to release a best of album after two non-holiday albums.
Bill Lamb of About.com was shocked that "put together Most Wanted, a compilation of past material and 3 new songs". He gave it "4 stars if you do not already own Metamorphosis and Hilary Duff", commenting how the three new songs seemed to "be marking time instead of finding a new direction". He called the rest of the album a "strong compilation" of tracks.[1]
A review from IGN, stated that Duff, like Lindsay Lohan, was "whin[ing] about her fame and how nobody really knows her" during "Wake Up". It also noted that "Beat of My Heart" sounded like a Europop track.[2]. It also noted how Duff had yet to settle down and was still "actively searching for her own voice and image" [3].
Tracy E. Hopkins of Barnes & Noble gave it a positive review, by saying that Hilary had "won the battle for teen pop supremacy against her party girl rival, Lindsay Lohan -- whose debut album, Speak, was a flop" and that the album was somewhat of a "greatest-hits-so-far package". She concluded by saying that there was "plenty to want" about the album. [4]
[edit] Promotion and chart performance
[edit] Album
In its first week the album sold nearly 208,000 copies, and it became Duff's first album to debut at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart. It stayed at number one for a second week (despite a 51% drop in sales),[1] before dropping out the top five in its third. The RIAA certified the album platinum for shipments of over one million copies within eight weeks of its release. Most Wanted spent thirty-five weeks on the Billboard 200, five of which were in the top twenty.
In Canada the album debuted at number one and stayed there for two weeks. It was certified two times platinum, selling 200,000 copies just four months after its release.[5] In Australia the album peaked at number three and, like Duff's previous two albums, was certified platinum for sales of 70,000 copies.[6] In the UK the album debuted and peaked at number number thirty-one.[7] It was certified gold there for sales of 100,000. [8]
On the United World Chart the album debuted at number one,[9] dropping to number seven in its second week.[10] By then sales had exceeded 100,000 worldwide (excluding U.S sales). The album continued to fall on the chart, reaching number fifteen the next week.[11].
[edit] Singles
"Wake Up" was released as the album's first single and debuted (and peaked) at number twenty-nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, Duff's highest peaking single on the chart. The single reached the top twenty in countries such as the UK and Australia, and the RIAA certified it gold. Its music video was an MTV Total Request Live staple for several weeks. "Wake Up" was a moderate international success, charting on more than ten international charts. Bill Lamb of About.com hailed it as the "pop anthem of summer 2005" and that "the singalong chorus is nearly perfect and a great one to share with friends". He gave it a 4.5 star rating, commenting on how it was a perfect beach pop anthem.[12]
Promotion for "Beat of My Heart", the second single, began in November; it failed to chart on the Hot 100, while its video topped the TRL countdown and Most Wanted returned to the U.S. top forty during the same period. It was more successful than "Wake Up" in Australia, where it peaked inside the top twenty.[13]. Reviews were poor; Newsround, for example, wrote that the song had "cheesy lyrics and bad rhyming during the verses" and commented about how the phrase "beat of my heart" was repeated thirty-times times.[14]
Originally slated for release as a full single, "Supergirl" was issued as a digital single in the U.S. the following February. In the UK "Fly" was released as the album's second single in March 2006, and it reached the top twenty.
Duff embarked on a Canadian-only concert tour in 2005, titled Most Wanted Tour, and she later went on the Still Most Wanted tour.
