Morphware

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Morphware denotes "reconfigurable hardware", for instance a FPGA or a Reconfigurable datapath array. Here the term hardware is misleading, since interconnect fabrics inside morphware is not hardwired. It is proposed that the term morphware should be always used instead of reconfigurable hardware.

A morphware unit can be structurally programmed from configware sources compiled into configware code to be downloaded into the hidden RAM of the morphware unit. Compared to application-specific hardwired hardware, morphware provides flexibility and avoids by using COTS semiconductor devices the need for expensive application-specific silicon.
