Morning Rush
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Morning Rush is an FM radio show of Monster Radio RX93.1 that airs Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m...in Metro Manila, Philippines and is hosted by Chico Garcia and Delamar.
Its main feature is the Top Ten (formerly Hot Ten). The DJs would pick a topic for the day and announce it at the start of the show. (Chico would usually choose everyday except Wednesday, when Delle would choose the topic) DJs would choose from topics suggested by listeners or occasionally come up with their own topic. Some past topics include: Top 10 stupid things you've said or done while you were drunk, Top 10 signs that you are cheap and Top 10 did you knows.
During the 3 hour-stretch, listeners would submit their entries via SMS (Philippines being the world's texting capital). The DJs would then pick the best entries and announce the bottom half starting at around 6:20 and the top half starting at around 6:50. The whole show would have three batches of top ten lists. The Saturday show is a little different, with listeners calling in over the phone to give their entry, so in effect, there would be no ranking.
The show has a cult following of listeners, who call themselves "Rushers". Rushers would usually tune in to the show while on their way to work or school. There are also a lot of overseas listeners all over the world who tune in via the Internet, usually those who are previous listeners of the show.
The show owes its success to the two DJs: Chics and Del (as they are sometimes fondly called). Chico Garcia (real name: Frederick Lagbao) and Delamar (real name: Delamar Arias) have hosted the show together since 1996. They moved from Monster Radio Rx 93.1 to 93.9 KCFM, stayed with them for three years and then went back to Monster Radio in 2002.
Some of their unique hosting traits include:
- Chico and Del would laugh for a long time, about 5-10 seconds. They would start with an audible laugh but will end up with an inaudibe one. The listeners would hear a 3-5 second gap of silence, which would be nice since it goes to show just how sincere their laugh was.
- Chico and Del would give their opinions regarding an entry by citing situations from their personal lives, sometimes carefully omitting certain details.
- They would tease each other on the air, Chico teasing Del about her "hairy chest" and Del would tease him about his "Baby Whale" (apparently his term of endearment for his special someone).
- They would give personal film and book reviews. They would also discuss tv shows they like to watch like Survivor, American Idol, etc.(usually Chico). They would also mix in some trivia information from Discovery(usually Del).
- Listener entries would border on the naughty side by having ambiguous and double meanings. Chico would try to explain the entry using the safer meaning.
The show is distinctly funny thanks to the humorous way the DJs go through the top ten. The DJs would regularly get SMS from listeners who would tell them that people would look at them like they were crazy when they are listening to the show. One particular case was when the listener was in her car alone and driving to work, and people were staring at her because they would see her laughing by herself . Another case would be a student listening to the show on his mobile phone, commuting on a jeepney, and couldn't help himself laughing out loud, to the surprise and curiosity of his fellow commuters. A third case would be a commuter on an MRT train listening to the show on his mp3 player, and grinning widely, trying not to laugh out loud, while people would be staring at them, wondering why the silly grin.
Recently (2005), the show had two new members: Brad Turvey and Sarah. Brad Turvey joins in Monday and Wednesday while Sarah joins in between those days. Brad would be teased as "Squidward" or "squidboy". Sarah would be teased as "alcoholic".
