Mormon apologetics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mormon apologetics is the field of apologetics directed toward Mormonism. It is the systematic defense of Mormonism against its critics. The term Mormon apologetics also sometimes refers to scholarly efforts to defend a particular view of orthodoxy within Mormonism, most often the orthodoxy currently promoted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, against dissenting or divergent views.
Mormonism has always had those who defend the faith; from the early days of leaders such as John Taylor and B.H. Roberts to the more scholarly work of Hugh Nibley.
The most well-known Mormon apologetic organization is the Foundation for Apologetic Information & Research (FAIR). There are also numerous forums for Mormon apologetics which have appeared across the Internet.
The Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS), a research organization based at Brigham Young University (BYU) since 1997, is considered by many critics of Mormonism to be an apologetic organization. However, most of their research focuses on near eastern ancient texts, Mormon history and Book of Mormon archaeology.
