Morehead Scholarship

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Morehead Scholarship is a four-year full scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Founded by John Motley Morehead III in 1951, and modeled after the Rhodes Scholarship, it is the oldest merit-based scholarship in the United States.

The four main criteria used to select Morehead Scholars are:

  • Capacity to lead and motivate fellow students
  • Scholastic ability and extra-curricular attainments
  • Moral force of character
  • Physical vigor, as shown by participation in sports or other activities.

[edit] Benefits

Benefits include:

  • Full tuition to the University for four years
  • An annual stipend that covers all other normal expenses including student fees, housing, meals, books, supplies, travel, laundry, etc.
  • Laptop computers for all freshmen
  • A four year Summer Enrichment Program, beginning the summer before the freshman year.
  • Mentoring from staff at the Morehead Foundation, which administers the program.

The total monetary value for the Morehead is estimated to be $140,000 for out-of-state students and $80,000 for in-state residents.

[edit] Summer enrichment

A key part of the scholarship is the opportunity to participate in a summer enrichment program, which can be customized by the scholar. Each year of the summer enrichment program is associated with a particular theme:

  • Freshman Year: Outdoor Leadership. (The scholar participates in an Outward Bound or NOLS course.)
  • Sophomore Year: Public Service. (The scholar designs their own public service project or participates in an existing program.)
  • Junior Year: Travel Study. (The scholar creates a project pursuing a specific interest or interests)
  • Senior Year: The Enterprise Experience. (An eight to twelve week internship with a company.)
