Mordenkainen's Disjunction

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mordenkainen's Disjunction, abbreviated MDJ, is a powerful arcane spell in the game Dungeons and Dragons which attempts to strip all magic from an enemy. It is a spell capable of penetrating almost all magical defenses and destroying magic items. It is named for Mordenkainen, a powerful archmage in the Dungeons and Dragons campaign setting of Greyhawk.

A player using a wizard or sorcerer character can cast this spell on a group of enemies to make ineffectual or deactivate all of their magic items or spells. It also has a small chance (1% chance per caster level) to destroy an artifact. If successful, the magical backlash can permanently destroy all magical spellcasting ability of the caster. When the destruction of an artifact is necessary for the plot of the game another means of destroying the artifact is generally provided by the Dungeon Master.

As a 9th level spell, Mordenkainen's Disjunction may only be cast by very powerful Wizards and Sorcerers, as well as Clerics with access to the Magic Domain. 9th level spells are the highest level spells available to players in normal Dungeons and Dragons.

MDJ has the ability to thoroughly cripple any character who relys heavily on magical items. Since most player characters fit this description, some Dungeon Masters have outlawed or modified MDJ in their campaigns.
