Moore College of Art and Design is an art and design women's college located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Currently, there are approximately 500 women enrolled.
Moore College was founded by Sarah Peter as the Philadelphia School of Design for Women in 1848. It was the first and only women's art and design college in the nation, and one of only two in the world. The school's first major, textile design, prepared women to work in the new industries created by the Industrial Revolution, of which Philadelphia was a center.
Today, Moore has nine fine arts and design programs leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The majors offered are: Fashion design, 2D fine art, 3D fine art, art education, graphic design, illustration, interior design, art history, and textile design. For the fall 2006 semester, two new majors were added: photography/digital arts and curatorial studies.
Moore has a difficult and intense first year[citation needed], known as the Basic Foundation year. Many enroll for Basic year and then transfer to another college, which is why there is such a difference in enrollment between the freshman and senior classes.[citation needed]
