Montfort-sur-Risle is a commune and the chief town of a canton of the Eure département, in the Haute-Normandie région of Normandy, in France.

In Gallic times the river Risle delimited the territories of the tribes of Veliocasses and the Lexovii.

Founded by Thurstin de Bastembourg, seigneur of Pont-Authou (-1027)
His son Hughes I de Montroft, seigneur of Pont-Authou and Montfort-sur-Risle died defending William the Conqueror in 1040.
Hughes II de Montfort participated in the Battle of Mortemer in 1054 and the Battle of Hastings. The Constable (Connétable) of Normandy, then of Normandy and England, and Châtelain of Dover, he received 114 manors in England and died in 1087.
Hughes III de Montfort was Constable of Normandy and England.
