Monterey Jack (Rescue Rangers)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Monterey Jack is one of the central characters in the animated television series Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers. "Monty," as he is known to his friends, is an adventure-loving mouse who spent years traveling the world before a chance meeting with Chip and Dale led to the formation of the Rescue Rangers; his experience in almost every field of endeavor gives him a large (some might say interminable) body of stories to share with anyone who will listen, as well as a reasonable store of practical knowledge that occasionally proves useful to the team. He speaks with a strong Australian accent and appears to be significantly older than the other members of the team.
Monty's main role in the Rescue Rangers is as the muscle; he is incredibly strong, able to lift objects that even humans would have trouble moving. His one weakness is cheese (indeed, his name is based on a type of cheese, monterey jack). Whenever he sees or smells cheese anywhere in the vicinity, he is almost hypnotically drawn to it, although he can be snapped out of this trance in dire straits. (Ironically, despite what cartoons have been claiming for decades, real-life mice are not particularly drawn to cheese and will often ignore it if better food is available). It's not explained whether his "cheese attacks", as they are referred to in the series, is something that's been with him since birth or something he became afflicted with sometime before he joined the Rescue Rangers. Another weakness Monterey Jack has is a fear of alley cats (with the exception of Fat Cat).
Monterey Jack is the only Rescue Ranger to have two living parents, both of which have been shown during the series, Cheddarhead Charlie (his father) and Camembert Kate (his mother), who are also travelers. Cheddarhead Charlie appeared in "Parental Discretion Retired" and Camembert Kate appeared in "A Lean In The Property".
According to a flashback in the episode, "Love Is A Many Splintered Thing", Monterey Jack also had a girlfriend named Desiree D'Allure, whom he rescued while breaking up a counterfeit cheesecake ring (and became intoxicated with her perfume scent, similar to his reaction to cheese). Monty was supposed to marry her, but suffered a cheese attack caused by the smell of cheese from the back of a truck and chased after it. When Desiree returned in "Love Is A Many Splintered Thing", Desiree began using Monty as a strongman in stealing valuable furniture from a museum, then reveals that she is actually a crime boss.
Prior to joining the Rescue Rangers, Monty traveled in the company of Zipper, the enthusiastic fly who also joined the team and Gadget Hackwrench's father up until "The Zanzibar Incident" when Monty and Gadget's dad inexplicably parted ways.
As a Rescue Ranger, he is most frequently in the company of either Zipper or Dale, whose fun-loving nature matches his own, though he also seems to consider Gadget Hackwrench as something of a surrogate daughter since Gadget's father presumably died (in "To The Rescue, Part III", Gadget says her dad went off in an airplane and never came back).
The voice of Monterey Jack was originally supplied by Peter Cullen. Jim Cummings took over the role during the show's second season run.
