Monterey Hills a small, diverse, middle-class community within the city of Los Angeles, California located about 4 miles ENE of downtown Los Angeles and about 3 miles from Pasadena off of the 110 Freeway. It is surrounded by El Sereno to the southeast, Hermon to the east, Montecito Heights to the southwest and the independent city of South Pasadena to the northeast. Monterey Hills is part of the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council (ASNC).
As its name implies Monterey Hills is situated atop a series of relatively high wooded hills up to 800ft high. Because of the beautiful trees, outstanding vistas and very tranquil setting it has often been called "One of the best kept secrets of LA".
The residents of Monterey Hills include many professional people; Doctors, Nurses, Lawyers, Librarians, etc. Monterey Hills residents take pride in their hill top community, working together to preserve its history, character and the natural environment that surrounds it. The environment is unusual for people living in an urban area. It is within the Arroyo Seco, a unique watershed canyon that is a haven for native plants and animals. Trails cross through the many geologic areas that comprise the Arroyo Seco, offering solitude and beauty. Because of the many oak trees that grow in the Arroyo Seco and cover the land in and around Monterey Hills, residents see native animals and birds in their backyards and on the streets.
There are many colleges and universities within an easy drive of the community, including the top-ranked University of Southern California. Griffith Park provides over 4,000 acres of open space. The Los Angeles Zoo is located at Griffith Park as are the Observatory and Planetarium. Beaches, including eclectic Venice Beach, are a short 30-minute drive away.
Every year the residents hold the Monterey Hills Jazz Festival as well as smaller cultural events.
Close to downtown but removed in the hills, Monterey Hills is a refuge from the hustle and bustle of city living a beautiful natural setting. Real estate options in Monterey Hills consists of single-family detached homes, estate properties, condominiums, townhouses and land lots.
In recent years real-estate values have skyrocketed in Monterey Hills as more Angelinos discover this hidden jewel.
