Monteo was a native of a nearby tribe on the island of Roanoke who was brought back to England from the Americas. He was brought with another native named Wachese who hated England, but Monteo loved it, wearing European clothes and learning a little English. Queen Elizabeth was so pleased she granted Sir Walter Raleigh a 7 year charter to bring colonists to the Americas.
