[edit] History

The breed was created through crossing of local breeds from the Franche-Comté region with Fleckvieh cattle at the beginnung of the 18th century. So you can explain the likeness of the Montbeliard cattle and the Fleckvieh cattle. 1889 the breed was accepted officially, and a stud book was founded.

In the 1970s Red Holstein cattle was crossed in. At the same time they crossed in sporadically Fleckvieh bulls but this was not very successful. In the 1990s the Montbeliard cattle was used for crossing into the breeds Danish Red cattle and Vorderwalder cattle.
