Montague, Prince Edward Island
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Montague is a town (2001 pop. 1,945) straddling the Montague River, the dividing line between Lot 52 and Lot 59 in Kings County, Prince Edward Island. The town, despite it's small population offers a very good amount of services, including large chain grocery stores, retail stores, fast food restaurants and a strangely large amount of car dealerships, as it serves the entire eastern side end of the Island.
Located east of Charlottetown and southwest of Georgetown in the eastern part of the province on the Northumberland Strait, the community's precise location is 46º10'N, 62º39'W.
[edit] History
At the time of Samuel Holland's survey in the 1760s, Georgetown was designated as the shire town of Kings County. The Montague River was the southernmost of three rivers draining the area. Eventually Lower Montague and the Montague Road and Montague Bridge were named after the river. The river itself traces its name to either George Brudenell, 4th Earl of Cardigan (later George Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu), John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, or Montague Wilmot, Governor of Nova Scotia (which then included St. John's Island - present-day Prince Edward Island) at the time of Holland's survey. Former Premier William Bennett Campbell and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brad Richards were born here.
