Monk's Walk School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Monk's Walk School is a comprehensive secondary school on the outskirts of Welwyn Garden City.
Relatively new, it was built in the 1960s and, contrary to popular belief, not on the site of an old abbey. It has recently acquired a new headmaster—Mr. Phillip Bunn—and adopted the title of 'Specialist Science College'.
Monk's Walk consists of five blocks; A, B, C, D and E. The names have now been altered to: Archimedes, Babbage, Curie, Darwin and Einstein.
Archimedes deals with Maths, ICT, Music, History, Geography, and Physical Education.
Babbage, the largest, consists of Science, Languages, English, Drama, ICT and a Library which of late has acquired fingerprint recognition systems.
Curie has Music, Art, Religious Education, Business Studies, Geography, ICT and a large Sixth Form Common Room for A Level students relaxation and study time.
Darwin, the smallest, has but 2: ICT and Design and Technology.
Einstein, the newest (indeed, it is not yet 10 years old) has Science and other forms of DT in a two-story modernised complex.
Other secondary schools in the area include Sir Frederic Osborne, and Stanborough. There is also a private school named Sherrardswood across the main road.
The school's annual student intake is approximately 220 11 year olds of both sexes. It also has 100 approximately teachers and staff.
[edit] Interesting facts
In 2005–2006, Year 9 had the highest SAT grades the school has ever had.
The school is situated near the end of Knightsfield Road, Welwyn Garden City.
Although no abbey is ever thought to have been the school's namesake, a part of the local forest, Sherrard'swood is originally called Monk's Walk, and has been for longer than the school's existence.
