A Flag Lowering Ceremony was held at 6.00pm 22 November 2006 at 12, Winstedt Road, MHSS Parade Square. A few hundred ex-Monkshillians from yesteryears turned up to witness the event together with the present staffs and students.

Summary from the principal Mr Syed Mohamed Ashraf Shah's speech during the Flag Lowering Ceremony.

  • Monk's Hill Secondary School is closing because of a drastic drop in enrolment.
  • In year 2001, the school had 800 students. In year 2006, it has fewer than 300.
  • The school has performed well and won the Academic Value Award in year 2005.
  • The merging is not because of non-performance. It's an honourable closure.

The school flag was lowered as the school song was sang the last time. It was a sad and solemn moment for all. At the end of the ceremony, the school flag was presented to it's Principal Mr Syed Mohamed Ashraf Shah for his entrustment and safe keeping.

[edit] History

The school’s history began in 1958 on a plot of land that was once the site of a Chinese monastery. The name ‘Monk’s Hill’ is a reminder of this piece of history. Monk’s Hill became an integrated school in 1961, offering both English- and Malay-medium education to its intake of pupils. In 1976, the two mediums of education were merged and Monk’s Hill established itself as an English-medium school. In 1993, it became a single-session school when it shifted to its new premises at 12 Winstedt Road.

In 1960, Monk’s Hill presented its first batch of candidates for the national School Certificate Examination. In 1964, the school song was composed. In 1967, it held its first Speech and Prize-Presentation Day. The School Advisory Committee was formed in 1968, followed by the Alumni Association in 1989. The Parent-Teacher Support Group was formed in 2000 and is today a very active stakeholder of the school.

The school is currently led by Mr Syed Mohamed Ashraf Shah who was appointed Principal with effect from 1 January 2003. It has had 9 prior Principals in its 45-year history.
