Monchique (pron. IPA: [mõ'ʃik(ɨ)]) is a municipality of southern Portugal, in the district of Faro (formerly the province of Algarve).

It is located 13 miles south of Saboia station on the Lisbon-Faro railway, and 12 miles north of Vila Nova on the Atlantic. Monchique is one of the main Portuguese health-resorts, finely situated among the wooded heights of the Serra de Monchique, which rise on the west to 2963 ft. There are hot sulphur springs, with baths and a sanatorium 4 m. south in 'Caldas de Monchique' ( Spring of Monchique). Wheat, millet, rye, beans, oranges, wine, olive oil and chestnuts are the chief products, and there is a woollen factory.Medronho a local brew made from distilled Medronho berries ( Albutus/ Strawberry Tree)Originally created in back room stills. Now a comercial product chiefly in Silves. Monchique Medronho, however retains an originality and flavour, that is unrivaled.
