The Monash University Philharmonic Society is a student-run music club that is affectionately known as "The Phil" to its members. It consists of three performance ensembles, the Monash Philharmonic Orchestra, the Monash Symphonic Winds (MSW) and the Monash Jazz Orchestra (MoJO). The Phil is primarily based at Monash University Clayton Campus, Australia. It is one of the most active clubs on campus and continues to offer students and community members the chance to play ensemble music. However, with the threat of voluntary student unionism (VSU), clubs like the Phil may not exist.

[edit] About The Phil
The Phil promotes music strongly within Monash University and the surrounding community by regularly performing at concerts on campus and in nearby venues. The Phil is not only for Monash Uni students however, secondary school students, Uni staff and members of local (and distant) communities are welcome to join.
As well as rehearsing and putting on concerts, Phil members also have much fun along the way with regular social events including movie nights, cocktail parties, mini-golf and outings to the free Melbourne Symphony Orchestra concerts over summer. Post-concert parties are also a highlight of each season.
[edit] History
Formed in 1982, The Phil began as just a string quartet. Soon it grew to be a fully-fledged orchestra, before it decided to expand in 2003 to also include a symphonic wind band and a stage band [1]. The Monash University Philharmonic Society is now one of the largest club on-campus at Monash University, and one of the most active.
2007 will be the 25th Anniversary of the Monash University Philharmonic Society, a fact which will be celebrated at all of next year's performances, culminating in a 25th Anniversary Concert expected to be held in September.
[edit] Monash University Orchestra
Originally known as the MUO, the Phil was forced to change its name in 1991 the after Monash University School of Music decided to start its own orchestra. The Phil was paid compensation from the University around this time. Now all remains from this era are some quality 80's blue jumpers, old cassette tapes, a few letterheads and some red MUO badges.

[edit] Ensembles
[edit] Monash Philharmonic Orchestra
The Monash Philharmonic Orchestra is a full-scale Symphony Orchestra conducted by Shane Walterfang. Currently in its 24th year, the Philharmonic Orchestra continues to go from strength to strength. Performing classics from Beethoven, Mozart, Dvorak and Prokofiev, the Philharmonic Orchestra has also performed modern works by composers such as Matthew Hindson and John Williams. The Orchestra has also performed a number of concertos and will again be running a concerto-based concert in December 2005 to showcase a wide range of talented musicians within the Phil.[3]
[edit] Monash Symphonic Winds
The Monash Symphonic Winds performs with the Monashphil, with other community groups and participates in the Melbourne Schools Band Festival and other festivals. The ensemble is establishing itself as a premier concert band in the southern suburbs under the baton of Ingrid Martin.[4]
[edit] Monash Jazz Orchestra
The Monash Jazz Orchestra is the Monashphil's Stage Band. MoJO is fast developing a name for itself as one of the best big bands on the university campus. Performing regularly on campus and in the local community, MoJO keeps the music going long after the other ensembles have stopped. It is conducted by Zach Clarke.[5]
