From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I don't need to look for Molly Bloom on the web or in Wikipedia to tell you who she is: she is a fictional character, not a real person. In James Joyce's Ulysses, Molly is Leopold Bloom's wife, so if Leopold is Ulysses, Molly is supposed to be Penelope. In the book there's a monologue by Molly which is in itself a masterpiece, according to me. In 1994 I was in Edinburgh and I had the opportunity to see it performed on stage in a wonderful way by Eartha Kitt, on Bloomsday. Joyce developed the figure of Molly Bloom after Nora Barnacle's personality, and Nora Barnacle was his wife. In fact the novel itself tells the story of one day in Leopold Bloom's life, and the day Joyce chose is exactly the day when he had his first date with Miss Barnacle, on the 16th of June 1904, which is also famous with the name of Bloomsday.
