Moloch (comics)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Moloch the Mystic (real name Edward Jacobi) is a fictional character in the 1987 graphic novel Watchmen. He is a former super villain and magician with satanic features, including pointed ears.
[edit] Biography
A crime boss from the 1940s through the 1960s, he ran an underground vice den and constructed a solar mirror weapon as part of his nefarious schemes. Over the course of his criminal career, he clashed with both Nite Owls, Ozymandias, and Doctor Manhattan. Eventually captured by Manhattan in a raid on his vice den, he spent the 1970s in prison, where he converted to Christianity and gave up his life of crime. Following his release, he lived alone in poverty in New York City, suffering harassment from Rorschach and the Comedian, until his murder in 1985 as part of Ozymandias' plot.
[edit] Origins
Considering that they based many of the Watchmen characters on various Charlton Comics superheroes purchased by DC, the series creators have never said whom, if anyone, served as the basis for Moloch.
Moloch might be a reference to a character in the Blake and Mortimer album Le Piège diabolique (The Time Trap) ISBN 2-87097-020-X by Edgar P. Jacobs.
