Moldova has only participated in the Eurovision Song Contest twice, in 2005 and 2006 (see ESC2005 and ESC2006). This is due to the country only joining the European Broadcasting Union, which countries must be part of in order to compete in Eurovision, in late 2004. Following the poor result in the 2006 Contest, the Moldovan broadcaster announced that it would withdraw from participation and did not allocate a budget for the 2007 Contest. However, in response to public pressure, TRM filed the preliminary documents to compete and is now seeking performers to try out for the Contest. The broadcaster has until January 2007 to withdraw with no penalty.[1]
