[edit] History
The norwegian aviation authorities decided to build two airports in Møre og Romsdal, one serving Ålesund, Vigra and one serving Kristiansund, Kvernberget, and not at Molde. Molde decided that they also needed an airport, and the city financed the airport that was finished in 1972. Braathens S.A.F.E said they would fly if the city builds an airport, and were the only airline at the airport until after the deregulation of the airline marked, serving with Fokker F-27, Fokker F-28 and Boeing 737. Braathens regional airline Busy Bee and Norwegian Air Shuttle also operated Fokker 50. In 1978 the airport was handed over to the government. A new passenger terminal opened in the early 1990s.
In 2005 the airport got permanent international status, and now has a duty free shop. Plans to extend the runway to 2,100 meters will most likely be realized in a few years, along with other improvements, including an upgrade of the terminal.
