During my life, I have encountered many difficulties and events, which have helped, shape my character and which have embraced me for the path ahead. However, none of them has left as lasting an impression on me than the extremely adventurous and cumbersome journey I embarked on last year…
A few friends and me had visited a hill station situated in the South of India. During our few days there, we witnessed the lighter side of life due to the sheer beauty and tranquillity of the countryside. Time flew by and it seemed that we had just arrived when the moment came to pack our bags and head back home. We boarded a coach and commenced the journey home. It seemed nothing out of the ordinary but we were completely unaware of the oncoming events about to unfold…
We left at around 8’o clock and since it was a 300 mile journey, we expected to reach our destination at around 6 am the following day after a good nights sleep. The first few hours of the journey were relatively docile as we were just gossiping amongst ourselves and recalling distant memories. At approximately 11 pm, the bus halted at a big city to pick up more passengers and we disembarked the bus to pick up a few snacks for the night. As I walked back from the grocery, I was overcome by a sudden sense of panic and horror as I noticed the bus heading of into the eerie mist!
We were panic-stricken and clueless on what to do. We roamed that area for about half an hour, trying to find a remedy to the grave situation we were in. Fortunately for us, the bus returned and we immediately got onto it. However, a state of utter chaos and confusion had gripped the people of the bus as it seemed that a few thugs were allowed on to the bus by the operating staff, in the hope that they could steal a few possessions of the passengers while everyone was asleep and share the spoils with the staff.
After about 30 minutes of utter turmoil, during which the three thugs were given a sound trashing by the common folk and were apprehended by the police, we finally set of for our final destination. At around 2 am, my cousin and me were just laughing over the matters of the evening when I suddenly heard a deafening sound and realized that we had just crashed head on into another vehicle!
The bus swerved off-road and started swaying from left to right, creating the impression that it would topple over at any second. It was a life-changing moment during which everyone was chanting the names of their gods and expecting their lives to come to a crashing end. Nevertheless, after 2 minutes of complete pandemonium, the bus came to a screeching halt and as we jumped out of the bus windows into the wilderness, we realized that we were indeed survivors.
Stranded in the middle of nowhere, an elderly person took this time to give a sermon on how lucky we were to survive the accident and that we must strive to accomplish the most in life, as we can’t take it for granted. As dawn broke out over the southern Indian skies, a different bus had arrived to take us finally back home. During the remainder of the journey, everyone’s face seemed sullen and serious, as everyone sat at their seats indeed appreciating how lucky they were.
Upon reaching home at around 5 pm the following day, I rushed to my bed and lied there, pondering over what significance these events had. I then realized that this was indeed a wake up call and implied that we must take life seriously. The accident made me recognize the importance of succeeding in life and striving to gain the most out of school and university life, in order to become an accomplished person and show that we all serve a meaningful purpose in life. I hope that one day, I can become a successful businessman and that at a seminar I can reflect back on the toll these events had on my life and state that we must conquer life, not the let it conquer us!
