Mohamed Ali Alabbar in Arabic محمد بن علي العبار is one of the most prominent citizens of the United Arab Emirates. A trusted aide of the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai - Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum- Alabbar serves as the Director General of the Dubai Department of Economic Development and Chairman of Emaar Properties, the largest real estate development company in the UAE, responsible for most of the construction going on in Dubai today.
As a member of the Dubai Executive Council, the supreme government body with the mandate to synergise all growth initiatives in Dubai, Mr. Alabbar is closely associated with the fast track economic development in the Emirate.
Under his able guidance, the Department of Economic Development has been instrumental in initiating innovative public policies to strengthen the trade and business segments and establish a culture of transparency and openness in Dubai. Dubai’s commitment to quality has received a boost with the establishment of the Dubai Quality Award, while the retail and tourism sectors continue to be re-energized through focused annual festivals, like the Dubai Shopping Festival and the Dubai Summer Surprises.
As Chairman of Emaar Properties, Alabbar has been instrumental in transforming Dubai's real estate environment into the most vibrant lifestyle property market in the Middle East. Emaar, a Public Joint Stock Company established in 1997, is listed on the Dubai Financial Market and is majority-owned by the Government of Dubai. Emaar is also responsible for the development of Burj Dubai, which is expected to be the tallest tower in the world on completion.
Alabbar has also contributed to the growth in Dubai’s non-oil sector as Vice Chairman of Dubai Aluminium Company Ltd (DUBAL) from 1992 to 2003, and enhanced Dubai’s image as a regional exhibitions and conference centre, as Vice Chairman of the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) from 1992 to 2002.
A sought-after speaker in international forums, Alabbar has often impressed his audience on global forums and media networks with his in-depth understanding of economic and business subjects. He has represented the United Arab Emirates several times at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Alabbar earned his undergraduate degree in Finance and Business Administration from the Albers School of Business and Economics at Seattle Universityin 1981 .
A keen sportsman Alabbar is the Chairman of the UAE Golf Association, and has been instrumental in putting Dubai on the global sports map through his involvement with the annual PGA-level Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament. He was recently named among the top ten golfing personalities in the world by Golf World, the No.1 golf magazine worldwide.
