Mobile Application Part (MAP) is a GSM protocol that provides an application layer for the various nodes in the core mobile network to communicate with each other in order to provide services to mobile phone users.
MAP relies on ETSI/3GPP Standards:
- in GSM Only versions (before R4) : TR 09.02
- From 3G/GSM R99 versions : TS 29.002
MAP is implemented on the SS7 family of protocols. The main operations executed by MAP are:
- Mobility Management
- Operation and Maintenance
- Call Handling
- Supplementary Services
- Short Message Service
