The 1996 Major League Soccer Cup was the first MLS Cup to be played. The game was played in very heavy rain on October 20, 1996, at Foxboro Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. D.C. United beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2 in overtime, after trailing 2-0, with 17 minutes remaining.
