MIT is an initialism that usually refers to Massachusetts Institute of Technology but can also mean one of the following.

Institutes of Technology:

• Madras Institute of Technology Chromepet, an engineering college in Chennai, India. (One of the four constituent colleges of Anna University, Chennai).
• Maharashtra Institute of Technology, a college in India
• Manipal Institute of Technology, an engineering college in Manipal, Karnataka, India
• Manukau Institute of Technology, a polytechnic in Manukau City, New Zealand
• Mapua Institute of Technology, a tertiary institute in Manila
• Melbourne Institute of Technology, a Higher education provider in Melbourne, Australia

It is also sometimes erroneously used to refer to RMIT, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (later RMIT University).

• Management of Information Technology, a field of study and degree program at the University of Virginia
• Author Kinky Friedman's characters, most notably his fictionalized version of himself and Mike McGovern, use the abbreviation MIT for "Man In Trouble", usually in the form of an alert over the telephone. This becomes an integral plot point in Steppin' On A Rainbow.
• Mit[t] is slang for hands, eg: "take your dirty mitts off me!"
