Mister Hand (Dark City)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mr. Hand is a fictional character portrayed by Richard O'Brien in the 1998 science fiction film Dark City.
Mr. Hand is one of the mysterious "Strangers" in Dark City, a group of beings who are able to stop time and manipulate the city at will. Each of the Strangers takes their name after a mundane, everyday object (such as a hand or book).
Curious about human nature, Mr. Hand explores the false memories of John Murdoch (played by Rufus Sewell), one of the unsuspecting people living in Dark City. In the process Hand takes on the persona of a serial killer. When the Strangers are defeated, Hand flees to an unknown fate. Presumably, he died because his system was unable to accept the mind he now had.
[edit] Comparison to Agent Smith
Hand is strikingly similar to the cold antagonist of The Matrix series, Agent Smith. Both develop a strange bond to their opponents, and develop frightening personalities. Both become increasingly god-like, and eventually fail to defeat their opponent.
