Route 40 was one of the original 1922 Missouri highways. It was redesignated in 1926 as Route 14 to avoid duplication with U.S. Highway 40 which was routed through the state. Its eastern terminus was at the Howell/Douglas County line, its western terminus was at Route 16 at Billings. For more on its history, see Route 14.
