Route 24 was one of the original 1922 Missouri state highways. Its eastern terminus was at Route 17 in Tuscumbia and its western terminus was at the Kansas state line in Bates County west of Amoret. When the U.S. Highway System was created in 1926, the number 24 was reassigned to avoid conflict with U.S. Highway 24 which also came through the state. It became Route 52; the former Route 52 had become part of U.S. Highway 59.
