Miss United Kingdom
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Miss United Kingdom is a title held by the highest ranking British contestant in the Miss World beauty pageant. It was created by Eric Morley in 1958, and came to include the whole of the United Kingdom from 1960 onwards. Traditionally there would be regional heats from the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom and the top x number of contestants from the regions would then compete for the UK title.
Until 1999, the winner of Miss United Kingdom would go on to represent the country in the Miss World competition. However, from 1999 onward, separate representatives from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland competed at Miss World. The highest ranking of the four delegates is named Miss United Kingdom, and competes at the Miss International Pageant the following year under the "Britain" or "United Kingdom" banner.
