Miss Texas USA

This article is about the state pageant to select a Texas delegate to the Miss USA pageant. For the Miss America state pageant, see Miss Texas

The Miss Texas USA competition is the pageant who selects the representative for the state Texas in the Miss USA pageant. In turn, the winner of Miss USA competes for the title of Miss Universe.

Texas is generally regarded as the most successful state ever to compete at Miss USA. They have had eight winners, three more than any other state, but only one Miss Universe. Texas may best known for its five consecuitve winners. Until these five beauties came along no state had ever won the Miss USA pageant more than two times in succession, but Texas then won consecutively from 1985 to 1989. Texas has also had the most semifinalists (or better) - 44, and has received the most special awards - 9.

The Miss Texas USA pageant itself is one of the most competititve among state pageants for Miss USA; the number of contestants often exceeds one hundred. To make it even tougher, many of the cotestants are winners from local pageants, the most notable of which are held in cities such Dallas, Houston, and Austin. Other contestants are "assigned" a title, but unlike local winners, they have to pay an entry fee in order to participate. The Miss Texas USA pageant also one of the few state pageants to be broadcasted on television (in the state of Texas naturally).

Christy Fichtner, Miss Texas USA, Miss USA and first runner-up for Miss Universe 1986 had a soon-to-be famous first runner-up - Oscar winner actress Halle Berry.

[edit] Former teens at Miss Texas USA

It is generally accepted that former Miss Texas Teen USAs have a harder time winning the Miss Texas USA title than other former teens do in other states. Many have tried and failed, including former Miss Teen USA Christie Lee Woods, and only four have succeeded. The most successful former teens was Nicole O'Brian, who placed 1st runner-up at Miss Teen USA 2000, competed but failed to place in Miss Texas USA 2002, but won the Miss Texas USA 2003 title the following year. She went on to place 2nd runner-up at Miss USA 2003.

Christie Lee Woods was the first former Miss Teen USA not to win a Miss USA state pageant on her first attempt. She first competed for the Miss Texas USA title in 2002, when she placed 3rd runner-up. She was a semi-finalist to fellow former Teen Nicole O'Brien the following year, and again in 2004, her last year of eligibility. At a similar time, another former Miss Texas Teen USA, Mandy Jeffries (1995) had a similar record in the Miss pageant. She was a non-finalist in 1998 and 2000, semi-finalist in 2002, 3rd runner-up in 1999 and 2003 and 1st runner-up in 2001. Both aged out without capturing the title. Andria Mullens (1997) was a non-finalist in 2000 and 1999, semi-finalist in 2001, second runner-up in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and then competed in New York in 2005 (4th runner-up) and California in 2006 (top ten). In 2006, Magen Ellis (Miss Texas Teen USA 2004) followed in the footsteps of Nicole O'Brien, winning the Miss Texas USA 2007 title only two years after giving up her Teen crown. Ellis had placed in the top ten in the previous pageant. She is the first teen from the "class of 2004" to win a Miss USA state crown.
