Miss Sweden
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Miss Sweden (in Swedish: Fröken Sverige), is a Swedish beauty pageant, qualifying the winner for the global contest Miss Universe and the 1st runner-up to Miss World. It has been sponsored from 1949 until 1999 by the magazine Vecko-Revyn, 2000-2004 by the television channel TV3 and since 2005 by the swimwear producer Panos Emporio. The competition has also handpicked delegates to Miss International and Miss Europe.

[edit] Pageant History
The Miss Sweden-tour usually starts during the summer for the competition of the following year. 10 candidates from potential cities in each region are selected. The winner represents the region and is qualified for the final night. There were 28 candidates from each region in total.
The 28 contestants are called to Stockholm for photos. The photos were released in media, such as television and Internet, for the final night. They also got tickets for a vacation abroad, as Dubai in 1996 and Barbados in 2002. Even though it was meant to be a vacation, the contestants did everything except relaxing. They took pictures in swimsuits and answered personal interviews for the viewers.
After the vacation, the contestants were sent to Stockholm once again. In seven days they had rehearsals on podiums, catwalks and lectures in English. They also met personal designers who helped them to produce evening gowns. The contestants and TV-team usually had a hard work from nine o'clock in the morning to twelve midnight.
In the seventh day, during Saturday morning, the contestants met the jury for three hours. And the showtime was just a few hours away.
The winner of the Miss Sweden Competition represented the country at Miss Universe. The vice- miss were sent to Miss World. But a positive career could also happen to the remaining contestants, after their appearance on television. It happened very often that model agencies wrote contracts with them.
Many contestants and winners in the pageant are still seen in show-business and some of them even have an extraordinary movie career, such as Anita Ekberg and Linda Isacsson.
In the year of 2005, the pageant supervisor failed to send Swedish contestants to international beauty pageants due protests and threats from several feminist groups. This was even worse than the threats in 2002, when two feminists walked on the stage and caused chaos during a telecast of the Miss Sweden selection. The pageant became also historical, when an interracial winner was picked for the first time in the pageant history. If it has to do with the feminist protests is still a riddle, because there was no jury, just a suggestion panel and the telephone company claimed the next day that the broadcaster was cheating, the winner was someone else.
Even though the pageant has splitted into four independent contests, instead of one, the strongest and also most criticised competition is Miss Sweden Universe. The franichise was bought in 2005 by the magazine Moore Magazine but was re-built by the Greek swimsuit designer Panos Papadoupolous in partnership with the television network TV8.
This pageant has given the world beauties such as Lena Olin and Jessica Folcker.

[edit] Applies for hostings
Sweden has searched to host the Miss Universe pageant twice in the early 1970's, but the wishes were never answered from the Miss Universe Organization.
Sweden also hosted the Miss Europe pageant back in 1956 and sent an apply to the Miss World organization to host the contest in 1995, but the rights went to Sun City, South Africa.
