[edit] History
The Mischords were founded in 1962 in response to the lack of opportunities for women to sing a cappella at Middlebury. They are named after a singing group to which one of the founding members once belonged in grade school.
Until 2004, the Mischords were the only all-female group on campus.
The Mischords' membership can range anywhere from 12-17 voices in a given semester. Each semester the makeup of the group changes as senior members graduate, new members join, and junior members go abroad.
[edit] Recordings
The Mischords repertoire consists of oldies, pop, rock, and folk songs, including a substantial selection of 80's classics, all of which are arranged by members of the group. No instruments are used in any of their songs. All parts, including vocals, instrumentals, and percussion, are performed by voices alone.
The Mischords have recorded six albums, with one on the way:
- Enchord (1992)
- At the Goat Bake (1994)
- By Sleight of Hand (1998)
- Chaos of Our Own Design (2000)
- Banishing the Dark (2002)
- Harlow Gold (2004)
[edit] Awards
The Mischords have received the following awards and nominations for their recordings:
- 1999: By Sleight of Hand was a CARA nominee for Best Female Collegiate Album.
- 2000: Love For Thee was a CARA nominee for Best Scholastic Original Song.
