As this event was in Europe and before collonization of America by Europeans, surely it should be called an Elk! Billlion 09:48, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

This is a good point of course, but based on my (Canadian) usage, "Alces Alces" (the Russian "лось", "los'", as depicted on the new fresco in Ascension Monastery) is very much a "moose" for me. Since I have not found any previous detailed (specious-specific) accounts of the story in English, I've taken the liberty of using the word that we know and love, and which, in today's international usage (cf. one of the intro "Swedish" frames in Monty Python and the Holy Grail), is less ambiguous. Its very loose to call them moose... but "miracle of the moose" has a nice ring to it. However it is wrong to use the word Moose for a European Elk, Moose certainly means "Alces Alces" but only one that originates from North America. Best thing to do is to look for an earlier description of this event in English, to see what it is called in English. Perhaps it is only widely known to Canadian-Russian! By the way, I doubt the Pythons knew or cared much about what Swedes call their deer, Elk = Älg in Swedish. Billlion 23:27, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
