Miriam Rivera (b. 1982, zodiac sign: Aquarius) is a television actor and pre-operative transsexual who appeared on the British reality television show There's Something About Miriam. She is sometimes credited as Miriam D'Abo.
Born in Hermosillo, Mexico, Miriam has three brothers and no sisters. Miriam knew she was different from four years of age and knew she wanted to be a girl. Whilst her brothers played baseball she preferred Barbie dolls. She says she is happy to remain pre-operative, is comfortable with who she is, and loves herself living in this way.
When she was 11 years old she met another male-to-female transsexual person who explained about feminizing hormones: how they make breasts grow and make a person appear more feminine.
She obtained the hormones for hormone replacement therapy from the pharmacy by telling them they were for her mother and her breasts began to grow, but it wasn't until she was suspended from school for being a bad influence that she explained her feelings to her parents. Her mother, father and brothers were very supportive and her father seemed to have guessed already, as people called her "faggot."
Miriam moved to another school but did not fit in there either and at 14 ran away and spent six months working at a strip club. As she recounts,
- I used to keep my shorts on so the customers could only put their money in the side. I made a lot of money—enough for my first boob implants.[1]
Finally Miriam's mother found her and suggested she live with a relative, whereupon she attended Hollywood High School from the age of 15. But whilst there she had a crush on a boy and during an intimate moment he touched her male genitalia.
The following day she was the talk of the school and she quit. She moved to New York to live with her uncle and started work in his estate agency. The 16-year-old started seeing men, but still carefully hid her transgender identity from them. She recalls:
- I went out with one guy for six months when I was 18.
- He asked me to marry him, so of course I had to tell him and he cried for a week.
- Because of his reaction I thought, "I am never going to do this again." I learned my lesson. I have to be honest about who I am.
- If someone asks me I will tell them, if someone gets attached to me, I'll tell them. But otherwise I won't.[2]
Miriam says she is happy with the way she is. As she has stated,
- My mother always says to me, "Why would you want to be half-and-half? Why don't you want to be a complete woman?" But I just love myself and I'm really enjoying my life.[3][4]
And
- In Mexico, they now compare me to Catherine Zeta Jones. I feel special—I feel unique.[5]
Previous to her staring role on the television show There's Something About Miriam, Miriam did her first professional photographic modeling under the stage name Victoria for the transgender erotica website Bob's Tgirls and filmed three adult videos for the transgender erotica company Androgeny Productions, all within a few weeks in circa November 1999. To date this has been the only time Miriam has done nude modeling or videos.
