Miracle Mart (Ontario)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Miracle Mart was a discount department stores chain in Ontario and Quebec, Canada, that was owned by Quebec-based Steinberg's Stores. These stores operated at mid-level and competed with the likes of Towers, Zellers and Kmart.

The stores were renamed M Store around 1986, but they failed to capture the volatile retail sector.

In 1990, A&P Canada acquired the chain in a $202.5 million deal from Steinberg's. The deal consisted of 58 Miracle Food Mart and 11 "Ultra Food & Drug" stores, mostly in Toronto area. Steinberg's divisional office complex in Etobicoke, Ontario was also acquired (now Dominion supermarket offices).

Most of the new store locations was retained by A&P as new A&P stores or property leased out to third parties by A&P.

The name lives on in a North Dakota supermarket chain.
