"Miracle" is the third single from Whitney Houston's third album, I'm Your Baby Tonight. The song was written by L.A. Reid and Babyface and is about a girl who had an abortion but later feels she made a mistake. In an interview at that time, Houston acknowledged the song was indeed about abortion and praised Babyface for digging so deep with the song's lyrical content.[citation needed] The video (directed by Jim Yukich) for the song doesn't stick with the subject, instead showing Houston singing and various photographs injected periodically.
With her two previous releases (both from the same album), Houston had reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. With a brief break in singles (due to "The Star Spangled Banner") Houston's third single was under much pressure to continue her run at the top of the charts. However, Houston's next single failed to reach number one, only managing nine, a relatively low showing for Houston. The song also did poorly on airplay, managing only thirteen, Houston's first song (not counting "The Star Spangled Banner") to miss the top ten on the Hot 100 Airplay. The song did reach eight on the Hot 100 Single Sales, Houston's fourteenth consecutive Top 10 on the chart. It reached number two on the R&B Chart and number four on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
The song also became Houston's first solo single (excluding "The Star Spangled Banner") to not top any chart. ("The Star Spangled Banner" eventually would top the Hot 100 Single Sales and Hot R&B Singles/Tracks Sales chart upon re-release in 2001.)
The song was not released internationally, following its relative lack of success in the U.S.
